May 22nd, 2015!
From the beginning of the company’s 37-year-history, Ben & Jerry’s has supported equal rights for all people. Now, as Irish people decide on the future of marriage equality , we want to show our support for a Yes vote by holding Yestivals around the country in partnership with YesEquality. In 2013 we also symbolically renamed Mint Chocolate Chunk to EngageMint Party as a way to show our support during the debate at that time, and now we want to step up our support for equality in Ireland.
Our Yestivals are a fun way to engage with people on the topic of marriage equality, and encourage people to vote Yes on 22nd May. We need everyone in Ireland to take stock of what’s at stake for equality in this vote, and encourage their friend and families to join them in a Yes vote.
Although many people treasure their civil partnerships as a way to express their love for each other, there are 160 legislative differences between civil partnership and marriage in Ireland. So the fact is that same sex couples in Ireland are still denied equal access to protection under the law. We strongly feel that we should not deny gay people the right to have a husband or wife, or to express their love for each other and commitment to each other in the same way as their straight friends and family – through marriage.
We hope that the partnership with Marriage Equality and YesEquality will last as long as it’s needed. If all goes well we hope that marriage equality can become a reality for everyone in Ireland on 22nd May.
